1963 Lotus 23-B, Cologne Capri

By William G. Sawyer, Editor at Large

The car that started our sports car lust, the diminutive and beautiful Lotus 23-B. Photo © Grand Prix Classics.Who hasn’t dreamt of the day six balls fall randomly into awaiting slots and change their life? Even those who don’t participate in the so-called tax on the poor occasionally find themselves thinking “If I won the lottery I’d…” We at TVD are no different. We scour the internet for interesting cars we’d buy if we had the chance. Starting with this issue we’ll share some of those cars with you.

We begin with the car that started us down the road of sports car lust — the Lotus 23, a car that literally stopped me in my tracks. As a young teenager returning home from my paper route I passed Imsport, a business dedicated to race preparing and selling sports cars.  It was an oddity in the Motor City, where rumbling V-8s ruled. Cool cars, at that time, were chopped-and-channeled ’32 Ford coupes, or modified American sedans sized for real people. When I spotted a green, knee-high sports car in Imsport’s showroom I nearly fell off my bike. It was impossibly low, like an American car fresh from the crusher on its way to the blast furnace. Every day for weeks I stopped by to stare in wonder. It opened a new world to me. One in which race cars not only turned, they did so in both directions. Soon my brother (and now editor) Chris accompanied me on my daily pilgrimage and the die was cast. Hot rods with Rat Fink decals no longer fascinated us. Sports Car Graphic and Road & Track replaced Hot Rod and Motor Trend on our night stands, and we haven’t been the same since.

Grand Prix Classics has a particularly luscious Lotus 23-B on offer. Chassis 23-S-42 was raced in the day by Rodney Bloor’s Sports Motors on all the famous British circuits against drivers like Jim Clark and Frank Gardner. Said to be the first 23 delivered with a 1.6-liter Cosworth Twin Cam, it set a lap record at Goodwood. Chassis plates and documented histories are important in the 23 market, where knock-offs are plentiful. Grand Prix Classics claims this one has it all, including a letter of authentication from first owner Bloor. If you’re a buyer, you can learn more by emailing info@grandprixclassics.com.

Cologne Capri RS3100

Photo © Taylor and CrawleyIn the early days of IMSA, Harry Theodorocopolous, a shipping magnate with a racing habit, captured our imaginations by campaigning a Ford Capri against the Porsches and Corvettes dominating the series. His dark blue underdogs broke more often than not, but that didn’t matter. We cheered him on at venues like Mid-Ohio and Pontiac, Michigan, a thoroughly unsafe street race not far from the site of the M1 Concourse that lasted only two years. Warren Tope, a burgeoning racer and son of a Ford Executive, won the first in a Pantera, and lost his life in the second. When Harry T’s Capri and Tony DeLorenzo’s Corvette showed up, Tope worried that his Pantera might be outclassed. He left the Pantera at the shop, and brought the McLaren M8E with which he had won the 1974 SCCA National Championship to the Wide Track II race. During the event, the McLaren rode under a single-beam guardrail that slid up the bodywork until it contacted Tope’s head, ending his life. Another memorable accident involved DeLorenzo, son of another auto executive, this one from crosstown rival GM, who managed to get his Corvette airborne mere feet from where we watched. Not trusting the Armco-and-snow fence barrier that separated us from the track we hopped on the hood of our mother’s Gran Torino, creating a dent we had difficulty explaining to our irritated father. Not surprisingly, this was the last officially sanctioned race throught he streets of downtown Pontiac.

More Capri lust ensued when Edsel Ford IIs European-spec Capri RS2600 appeared in a local Mercury dealer’s showroom. Around the same time, the first Gas Crisis crippled car sales. Manufacturers turned to rebates to re-ignite the market. Rebates weren’t new, Henry I declared buyers would receive $40-$60 cash back per car if he sold 300,000 new Model T’s between August 1, 1914 and August 1, 1915, resulting in a $15 million windfall for consumers and higher sales for Ford. Faced with close to 10,000 unsold 1974 Capri’s, Lincoln-Mercury followed suit, slapping $500 on the hood, a considerable percentage of the car’s sub-$3000 MSRP. I joined a deluge of buyers who purchased more Capris in 72 hours than the company sold in the previous 30 days. Unfortunately the Capri 2800 I received must have been dropped while loading it on the boat. Numerous visits to the dealer’s service department failed to correct a disconcerting habit of pulling strongly to the right at speed in a straight line, yet it wasn’t enough to dampen my passion. I still look fondly on that car, and consider it to be one of the best vehicles I ever owned, despite its many failings.

Which explains my passion for this Capri RS3100, one of three factory-built racers. This car won its debut race at the 1974 Zandvoort Cup in the hands of Jochen Mass and Rolf Stommelen. It continued its winning ways in the subsequent DRM (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft) event at Hockenheim driven by Klaus Ludwig. Niki Lauda followed up with a sixth place at the Norisring before Hans Heyer, Klaus Ludwig, and Toine Hezemans scored another first at the Jarama 4 Hours. This chassis, one of two surviving factory cars out of three, scored two wins out of two starts in the 1974 European Touring Car Championship and did the heavy lifting in Ford’s drive toward winning the ETCC title that season. At a time when memories of Ford’s European racing success center around the Ford GT, it’s important to remember the role the Capri played in propping up the company’s Total Performance branding on the continent.

Unfortunately, our virtual check arrived at Taylor & Crawley too late. Another Capri enthusiast with real money in his bank account scooped this car up as this article was being written, but that’s the beauty of a virtual collection. No real money changes hands, and you don’t have to worry when your dream gets sold. Visit www.taylorandcrawley.com for more information.
