October 2012

October 26, 2012: The combination of summer like weather and late nights watching the Detroit Tigers square off against the San Francisco Giants have left the staff at TVD dog tired. Rather than spend our time sitting indoors, we enjoyed the 70-degree days and caught up on tasks that needed completion before winter sets in. Then we burned the midnight oil rooting for a team that seems more tired and confused than us. We'll be back next week with new storiess, but encourage you to search through the site and acquaint yourself with The Virtual Driver thus far. We think you'll be surprised by what you find.

October 19, 2012: Ever wonder what the engines of the future might be like? We have, and so have the people at Achates (a-kay-tees) Power. Their solution? An opposed-piston, two-stroke diesel. You can read more about it here. Then again, perhaps you’re trying to figure out what Fiat will do to replace the Jeep Compass and Patriot or what to expect from the Dodge Dart SRT. We have some clues you might find interesting. Speaking of interesting, this weekend marks the running of the Petit Le Mans, and the Stateside debut of the DeltaWing. Unfortunately, the car was involved in a practice mishap. We have the video. If that’s not enough excitement, Editor Sawyer takes a test drive in Ford’s new Focus ST. Surprisingly quick and composed, is it good enough to knock VW’s GTI from its pedestal? And Al Vinikour drives with raccoons, and shines a light on their dangerous habit.

October 12, 2012: This week Al Vinikour gets a First Run in the 2013 Audi A4 and S4, and spills the beans about one high-speed Audi trip in his past. Chris Sawyer also steps back to those days of yesteryear for his review of the Audi TT. Now that its well on its way with EcoBoost, Ford reveals its work in carbon fiber panels for future vehicles. And rumors about massive changes coming to the Speed network are true, but that doesn’t mean all the speculation is right. Finally, Mr. Vinikour listens to the navigation systems in the cars he drives… and he doesn’t like what he hears.

October 5, 2012: Lyonheart sets a production limit for its Jaguar E-Type homage, adds a convertible version, and denies U.S. buyers a chance to own its rolling sculpture. Al Vinikour is on the track of new cars. First, he insists on adding his two-cents worth to Editor Sawyer’s intro story on the 2013 Accord. Next, Al gets his hands on five new Chevys, and tells us what he thinks of the Bow Tie Brigade’s new offerings. Not to be outdone, Sawyer begins with a near-Tirade on last week’s NASCAR race in Dover, a race that redefined the word “boredom”. Next, he comments on motorcycle legend Willie G. Davidson’s recent meeting with Pope Benedict XVI. That’s followed by a look back at the career of F1’s Michael Schumacher, who announced his second, and probably final, retirement this week. And Sawyer wraps it up with a First Run in the Lexus LS. To round out this week’s offerings, Al goes off on instrumentation lighting… again. We have got to get his eyes checked.
