For the life of me, I could never comprehend why Volkswagen bought Italdesign. Sure, it got the German colossus the services of Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of Italy’s most prolific car designers, but were the abilities of an aging aesthete enough to buy his business? Wouldn’t it be cheaper in the long run to just rent his services, then move on to the next hot commodity when his star fades? That’s when a Volkswagen insider set me straight.
